An introduction to our Sustainability Commitments, Recent Changes and Future Goals. At ELLIE SHAI we are committed to adhering to the highest ethical standards and protecting the environment. We strive to be compliant in all aspects of our business, both product materials and supply chain.

REALISTIC SUSTAINABILITY

As our small business grows, our team set practical and realistic sustainability goals. These goals are centered around our use of synthetic fragrance oils and plastic components. We continue to evaluate components and strive to get better over time.

Why We Use Synthetic Fragrances: Currently we use a combination of both natural and man-made ingredients to achieve certain fragrances. There’s a common misconception about synthetic fragrances being bad and natural oils being good, but there’s a gray area. Incorporating synthetic fragrances allow us to use higher fragrance loads to create a stronger scent and their less toxic than their natural counterparts.

  • Using ethically sourced synthetic fragrances allows us to create and replicate fragrance notes without harming or over-harvesting the actual Musks and Ouds from nature.

You Still Use Plastic Materials: We would love to stop using Plastic completely, but 100% elimination is not realistic for our home fragrance business. Our Body Mist sprayers and rollerball inserts are necessary to keep the bottles airtight and to dispense the actual product.

CURRENT GOALS + PLANS

We have a few initiatives that we’re working on and actively sourcing materials for, when the time comes an announcement will be made.

Current Goal: Our goal is to switch from Biodegradable Packing Peanuts to FSC Certified Packing Paper in our shipping boxes.

Future Plan # 1: Reduce the use of single-use plastics like Bubble Wrap and the tape used to secure it. While still providing adequate protection for fragile items during the shipping process.

ANY CHANGES IMPLEMENTED?

Over the last two years we began transitioning away from using plastic bottles and jars. Choosing to incorporate more recycled, eco-friendly packaging for products and shipping materials.

  • Glass bottles instead of plastic bottles

  • Biodegradable packing peanuts

  • We no longer use Paraffin Wax in our Home Fragrance line of Abstract Candles and Wax Melts, opting for Natural Soy Wax instead.

  • As of May 2026, we stopped using Plastic Bubble Wrap to secure items during shipping. Instead opting for Recycled Cushion Paper.

We work with glass suppliers that have a shared commitment to sustainability, accountability and ethical fair trade practices both locally and abroad. While also having a transparent manufacturing process, a plan for glass waste reduction and overall recyclability.

SMALL-BATCH PRODUCTION

We handcraft all of our products in house via small-batch production. Small production runs are less damaging, create less waste and the process is more controlled. This is achieved through limited product launches and by implementing a made to order plan. As a result we aren’t tied down by large MOQ’s and create based on customer need.

Other Benefits of Small-Batch Production:

  • Paraben Free, Phthalate Free and Animal Cruelty Free

  • Each product gets the proper attention it deserves, most of our Jar Candles and Abstract Candles are Dye-Free

PACKAGING MATERIAL

Packaging plays a crucial role in the production and storage of our products. Preserving and maintaining the quality, safety and overall integrity of our products will always remain our top priority, even during our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

  • Most of our packaging was chosen for its overall durability, easy disassembly and its ability to be recycled with ease.

  • We place heavy emphasis on making better material choices and improving our sourcing. Looking into more suppliers that use renewable energy to power their production facilities.

REUSABLE MATERIALS?

We encourage our customers to reuse our vessels. Our Glass Candle Jars and Tins are reusable, giving them a second-life when the candle is finished. When cleaned throughly candle jars can be useful storage options.

  • Vessels needs to be thoroughly cleaned with warm water and soap before repurposing. We do not recommend using the vessels for food or cosmetic related products.

WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED?

Candle Jars, Dropper Bottles, 10 ml and 50 ml Body Mist Bottles, Shipping and Product Boxes can all be recycled in the appropriate recycling bin.

  • Candle Jar lids, Body Mist Spray Pumps and 10 ml Rollerball Inserts should be removed and discarded, as they are not recyclable.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

We regularly evaluate our materials and test better options and suppliers. We frequently test new formula modifications to make our products better.

Though it’s a work in progress, we are committed to doing better and changing the way we operate in all areas of our business. We are actively working to minimize and reduce waste that could end up in our local landfill. Through continued education we are committed to improving, challenging ourselves and evolving by taking a more minimalistic approach as a brand.
